S. P. M. - sue proprie mani - con questa sigla Claudio Capotondi firma le sue sculture per puntualizzare la caparbietà con cui esegue il faticoso lavoro di liberare l'opera dalla materia che la racchiude: il marmo o la pietra.

L'opera inizia a scaturire sulle Apuane, nella cava Michelangelo, con il contributo di quelle maestranze, i cavatori, che con competenza e dedizione coadiuvano lo scultore nel ricercare il blocco più appropriato, e prosegue poi nel grande studio in Pietrasanta dove, in solitudine, porta avanti la sua opera, a volte per mesi e mesi.

Ne risultano sculture di bellezza e fascino immenso. Capotondi cerca il movimento nella rigida pietra, il momento della tensione e della torsione della materia, l'istante esplosivo in cui la forma si frammenta o l'attimo in cui avviene la spaccatura da cui nasce una nuova vita. Sono i temi universali quelli che da cui parte la sua esasperata ricerca di purezza ed il traguardo lo raggiunge attraverso la fatica fisica e l'insistenza nel gesto del togliere, scavare e lisciare. Con ostinazione si confronta con i materiali più duri in assoluto da scalfire: il porfido ed il basalto.

Capotondi ha realizzato opere monumentali commemorative come l'arco PortaRoma2000 collocata a Fiano RomaNord e la "Fontanasfera" di Viterbo. Sue opere sono in collezioni private e pubbliche in Austria, Finlandia, Giappone, Libia, Olanda, Stati Uniti e Svizzera. Nato a Tarquinia nel '37 ha vissuto e lavorato prima a Roma poi a New York e negli ultimi anni si è stabilito a Pietrasanta. 

S.P.M - sue proprie mani- to be delivered personally- with this acronym Claudio Capotondi's signature sculptures emphasize the burdensome task which Capotondi endures when undertaking the laborious job of freeing the work from the matter that encloses it: the marble or the stone.

The work begins to stem on the Apuane, in Michelangelo's quarry, with the contribution of the masters, and the stone workers, who with competence and dedication assist the sculptor in searching for the most appropriate block. He then continues the great study in Pietrasanta where, in solitude, he brings forth his work, at times for months and months.

The resulting sculpture is of immense beauty and fascination. Capotondi seeks for movement in the rigid stone, the moment of tension and torsion of the matter, the explosive moment in which the shape is fragmented or the moment in which the split happens from which births a new life. Those are the universal themes which mark his exasperated search for purity and the aim to work through the physical fatigue and the insistent gesture of removing, digging, and smoothing down the stone. With persistence he confronts and shapes the hardest materials: porphyry and basalt.

Capotondi has realized commemorative monumental works like the PortaRoma2000 arch placed next to Fiano RomaNord and the "Fontanasfera" of Viterbo. His works are in private and public collections in Austria, Finland, Japan, Libia, Holland, the United States, and Switzerland. Born in Tarquinia in ' 37 he has lived and worked first in Rome then in New York, and in the last years he has been established in Pietrasanta.
